Bong Joon-ho is a prominent figure in South Korean
cinema, known for his works such as The Host (2006), Snowpiercer (2013), and Parasite (2019). Meanwhile, Boots Riley, an American filmmaker and musician, gained acclaim for his film Sorry to Bother You (2018). Both filmmakers are lauded for their adept use of satire to address social issues and challenge traditional storytelling (Sherlock, 2021). Satire is a powerful tool, making serious subjects accessible and engaging while conveying important societal messages. This study delves into how Sorry to Bother You and Parasite employ satire to portray class consciousness through cinematography. The paper contends that, despite using different approaches, both films adeptly illustrate the complexities of modern socioeconomic class dynamics. This study shows how Boots Riley and Bong Joon-ho use satire to depict class disparities, shedding light on the distinctions between Asian and American issues and global socioeconomic inequalities. Riley’s film employs bold and forceful satire to emphasise class consciousness, while Bong Joon-ho takes a more subtle and intellectual approach.

Keywords: Satire, cinematography, class consciousness, inequalities, storytelling.

VIEW FULL ARTICLE :

Muat turun :2289-5051_iJACH _Vol 12_Issue 8_Dec 2024

Syaza Iman Azhar, Mohd Erman Maharam Published : 31-12-2024 DOI : https://doi.org/10.62312/asw.ijach.12.8.2024 ABSTRACT Bong Joon-ho and Boots Riley are widely recognised as visionaries in cinema.
