Abstract

Diametrically opposed to the scientific methods of study, phenomenology assumes that actual lived experiences become data to achieve the objective. The difference being that the ‘scientist’ will theorise on a structure and then check to see if that theory exists. A phenomenologist on the other hand, will let the event run its course and then only comment on the experience of the event. Basically, phenomenology can be understood as the study of the various structures that make up experience be it perception, thought, memory, imagination, emotion, desire, and volition to bodily awareness, embodied action, social activity, etc (Davidson, 2025). This paper aims to bring to the forefront concepts of experience that shape our understanding of reality using elements from visual rhetoric, intertextuality and the like.

Keywords: phenomenology, perception, cinema, visual rhetoric, iconography.
